The Role


designaffairs is a strategic design consultancy that is creating change and disrupting the world in the second machine age. Our Portland studio is looking for a renegade design researcher to be out on the front lines of our mission. We need someone who can uncover human-centered insights to inform innovation and exceptional design. We want a generalist with deep research skills.



The Story


Design researchers are the gravity that puts extraordinary design in a proper orbit. As a designaffairs researcher you will lead teams and clients to explore and uncover human-centered insights for holistic products, services and experiences. Your discoveries will be the voice of the people who we design for, telling their story to unify the client and team’s vision. You should be a highly empathetic individual, have a passion for making people’s lives better, and thrive in ambiguity. You should have a deep understanding of research methodologies but more importantly, not be someone who follows conventions, but also has the ability to blend and create methodologies for different purposes and contexts. Details

This position requires an experienced application of various of research methodologies, in the aim of delivering research and insights that that can be eventually translated into business/brand/marketing strategy, product opportunity, UX (user experience), ID (industrial design) – or combinations of more than one of those disciplines. Manage primary and secondary research and collaborate with research teams and stakeholders: clients and users.


  • M.A. or above in design, sociology, psychology, data analysis or related field
  • Hands-on researcher with 3-5 years’ experience in a sound ability to scope a research process, lead fieldwork, conduct interviews and do desk research
  • An understanding of qualitative and quantitative research methods and an ability to design, execute and analyze ethnographies, co-creation workshops, interviews and surveys
  • Ability to synthesize findings and uncover and articulate insights
  • Ability to shape and lead strategic thinking based on findings
  • Exceptional storytelling skills and communication skills
  • Openess to constructive feedback and critique
  • Ability to work flexibly and efficiently, exercise a balance between research rigor and inspiration.
